Nancy Richards went to Kitchener's CKCO-TV while in university and is still there after twenty years, although the station's name has been changed to CTV.

The News at Noon at CTV Kitchener, Ontario, is co-anchored by Kyle Christie and Nancy Richards, and is one of the most professional and pleasant hours one could wish in a newscast. The hosts are amiable without being 'cute' and compassionate without being maudlin. And this can be difficult sometimes, because according to Nancy, "There are stories that really move us and it is up to us to deliver the facts without showing too much emotion."

Nancy Richards on Kitchener CTV

Nancy Richards was born in Hamilton, Ontario, but shortly afterward the family returned to her mother's native England for a few years, living in the Dorset region. Then came the trip back to Canada, where Nancy lived in Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville. She attended the University of Waterloo on a co-op program that brought her to CTV (CKCO-TV at that time), and she has never looked back. Starting as a student she learned what television writing, videography and reporting were all about first hand. Before she knew it she was at CTV to stay. Nancy even met her husband Matthew ( one of the directors of the newscast ) at the station. They were married in 1993 and have a son and a daughter who don't seem to be too interested in following her career path.

The Beat

Richards has a special segment, The Beat, which she presents on each show. It is a preview of all the events that are going on in entertainment in the Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding area and is quite popular with the viewers .She has also served as videographer and health reporter. "The only thing I haven't done is the weather and that's fine with me! " Weather segments on the show are ably done by veteran broadcaster Dave MacDonald on the Nightly News and Randy Steinman at noon.

A News Reporter's Typical Day

Nancy's day begins at 7 AM when she arrives at work ready to start writing the newscast. There is always a live interview segment, which is shared by Nancy and Kyle. Then she needs to book interviews with people who would be interesting to their listeners. They are on air from noon until 1 PM and then she puts The Beat on tape for the evening news. The workday is over at 3.

Interviewing Celebrities

Nancy enjoys interviewing interesting people and especially those who are forthcoming. However, she has had her share of interviewees who mumbled one-word replies to her questions. “That's when four minutes seem like hours,” she laughs. One of Richards' favorite celebrity interviews was with the Amazing Kreskin who certainly kept the conversational ball rolling.

Evening Newscast

For a year after regular evening anchor Janine Grespan was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, Nancy filled in for her. However, things are back to normal and Nancy is back at her usual place on the News at Noon. A new experience will begin on Fridays in March, 2009, when each crew member will bring in one of their own recipes and will try it out on the air. This should prove to be fun and entertaining for the viewers.

Nancy Richards is very happy to be working at CTV and the listeners are fortunate to have such a lovely and classy lady delivering their daily news.
