Glitz and glamour will take over the red carpet this summer as your favorite daytime stars gather in Los Angeles for the Daytime Emmy Awards.
It’s the time of year all daytime television viewers look forward to- nominations for the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees in New York on May 14th. The awards include 9 major categories. Also announced was the host for this year’s award show. Ugly Betty star and recording artist, Vanessa Williams will help hand the hardware at this year’s awards. Leading SoapsSo, who are some of the nominees up for daytime gold? The daytime soap operas collecting the most nominations include: All My Children, with 19 nominations, including categories in outstanding drama series, outstanding writing team, and outstanding new approaches in daytime. Days of Our Lives follows close behind with 13 nominations in categories including, outstanding drama series, outstanding directing team, and outstanding achievement in art direction. One Life to Live takes 11 nominations in categories including, outstanding writing team, outstanding directing team, and outstanding achievement in costume design. One of daytime’s all-time favorite soaps, The Young and the Restless receives 10 nominations, but surprisingly this doesn’t include a nomination for outstanding drama series, a category they nab at least a nomination for almost every year. Y&R’s nominations are in categories including, outstanding achievement in costume design, two nominations in the category of outstanding original song for a drama series, and outstanding achievement in music direction and composition for a drama series. Soaps with less then double digit nominations include: General Hospital with a total of 7 nominations including, outstanding writing team, and outstanding achievement in hairstyling. Following close behind is As the World Turns with 6 nominations including outstanding achievement for a casting director. The Bold and the Beautiful also holds on to 6 nominations including categories in outstanding drama series, outstanding writing team, and outstanding achievement in art direction. Despite going off the air this coming September, Guiding Light didn’t receive much sympathy, with only 4 nominations in categories including outstanding original song for a drama series. Soap Passions holds on to only 1 nomination for outstanding achievement in hairstyling. Daytime FavoritesOf course, the Daytime Emmy’s aren’t all about the soaps. In the category of Best Talk Show-Entertainment, the nominees include, the 26-year running, Live! With Regis and Kelly, the TV chef that always makes cooking look so easy, Rachael Ray, and the woman who’s known for sweeping up Daytime Emmys, Ellen. The nominees for Best Talk Show-Informative include, The Doctors, Dr. Phil, and The Tyra Banks Show. Best Talk Show Host nominees include, the funny duo thousands wake up to every morning, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, the bubbly, Rachael Ray, the always entertaining, Ellen DeGeneres, and the ladies of The View, who have been nominated in this category since 1999, but have never won. Nominees for Best Morning Program include, Good Morning America, The Early Show, and Today Show. Best Game/Audience Participation Show nominees include, Cash Cab, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Long-time children’s favorite, Sesame Street will be presented with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award for providing 40 years of education and entertainment for children.
